Born in 1550, in The Kingdom of Naples, of the noble Family of Lellis, Saint Camillus entered The Capuchin Order, but twice he had to leave it on account of a sore on his leg. For God intended him to be The Founder of a Congregation of Regular Clerks, Consecrating themselves to the service of the sick.
He obtained from The Apostolic See approbation for his Order. Inspired by the example of Jesus, Who died for us (Epistle) and Who has declared that there is no greater proof of love than to give one's life for others (Introit, Gospel), these Religious promise to tend the sick, even those stricken with the Plague.
Saint Camillus, as well as his Institute, received from God a special Grace to help Souls to emerge victoriously from the death-struggle (Collect, Secret), wherefore the name of this Saint has been included in The Litany for The Agonising,
Saint Camillus died at Rome on 14 July 1614. Pope Leo XIII proclaimed him the Patron Saint of Hospitals and Patients, and Pope Pius XI added “and of all those who nurse them”.

Two interesting notes about S. Camillus— which Zephyrinus probably knows— First, after he had become destitute due to gambling and being a wounded soldier of fortune, a Capuchin friar at the monastery where Camillus was working asked him to accompany him to a certain Capuchin friary in the rocky south of Italy, in the Gargano mountains. Along the way the fryer monstrated with Camillus about his life and urged him to a full conversion and commitment, because he saw something deep inside the young man. Finally reaching that monastery, Camillus had an overwhelming experience of conversion, which started him on a different path in his life. The name of that monastery? San Giovanni Rotondo—yes, the monastery that was to be the home of Padre Pio, about 300 years later.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, and I’m sure SF Ranas gnosis, but Camillus chose as a symbol of his order a red cross. It was that red cross symbol of S. Camillus, biographer Fr. Dominic Rankin says, that the international organization founded in Geneva sometime later chose as their symbol of international care and help.

Also, today being July 18th, I wanted to note that to Zephyrinus-blog readers, it was either in the evening of July 18th or the early morning of July 19,1830 (some biographers put it either way), 192 years ago “today,” on the vigil of S. Vincent de Paul, that the first apparition of Our Lady of Grace, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, manifested herself to the young novice, S. Catherine Laboure, and revealed she was to ask S. Catherine to carry out “a great task.”

Catherine occurred between July 18th and the end of November, 1830, in which the Blessed Virgin clearly explains that she is the Immaculate Conception; then, 24 years later, Pius IX declares the dogma, Dec. 8, 1854 (Ineffabilis Deus); and then, between February 11 and July 16, 1858, the Blessed Virgin yet again pronounces herself as the Immaculate Conception to S. Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes — Even though Bernadette did not know the meaning of that title and had never heard it before.
