Pope Urban I (Latin: Urbanus I) was Bishop of Rome, or Pope, from 222 A.D. to 23 May 230 A.D. He was born in Rome and succeeded Pope Callixtus I, who had been Martyred.
Much of Urban's life is shrouded in mystery, leading to many myths and misconceptions. Despite the lack of sources, he is the first Pope whose Reign can be definitely dated. Two prominent sources do exist for Urban's Pontificate: Eusebius' History of The Early Church and also an inscription, in the Coemeterium Callisti, which names the Pope.
Urban ascended to The Chair of Saint Peter in the year of The Roman Emperor Elagabalus' assassination and served during the Reign of Alexander Severus. It is believed that Urban's Pontificate was during a peaceful time for Christians in The Empire, as Severus did not promote the persecution of Christianity.
Urban is a Canonised Saint of The Roman Catholic Church and The Eastern Orthodox Church.

Born at Soana, Tuscany, Italy, Hildebrand became a Monk in the famous Benedictine Monastery of Cluny, on which, at the time, depended two thousand Monasteries. He soon became Prior, and was later Elected Abbot of the Monastery of Saint Paul-Without-the-Walls, Rome, and made a Cardinal of The Roman Church.
At the death of Pope Alexander II, in 1073, he was Elected Pope and took the name of Gregory VII. Thus, entrusted with the government of The House of God (Gospel, Communion), he participated in the full Priesthood of Jesus (Introit, Epistle).
At a time when the Bishops, mostly Simoniacal, were the dependents of Lay Princes, he strove with such constancy to defend the liberty of The Church (Collect) that, as we are assured, no Pontiff, since the time of The Apostles, undertook more labours for her (The Church) or fought more courageously for her independence.
While he was saying Mass, a Dove was seen to come down on him: The Holy Ghost thereby bore witness of the Supernatural views that guided him in the government of The Church. Forced to leave Rome, he died at Salerno in 1085, saying those words, the first of which are from Psalm XLIV: "I have loved justice and hated iniquity: That is why I die in exile."
Following the example of Saint Gregory, let us overcome with courage all adversities (Collect).

Fifty years ago, today, David Steel MP [above, Right] decided to introduce a Bill to legalise ABORTION in Britain.
Paul Lennon, Society For The Protection Of Unborn Children's Adviser on Parliamentary Affairs, has reminded the Society, this morning: "It is fifty years ago, today, that David Steel made the fateful decision to sponsor a Bill to make ABORTION more easily available."
In 2015, under Steel's tragic legislation, 509 babies were killed EVERY SINGLE DAY in England and Wales alone.

The Internet has brought a Golden Age of
evangelical opportunity. Atheists share the same soapbox
– but that should not deter us.
. . . That the Catholic Church, officially and (often much more successfully) unofficially, is so active Online, is perfectly natural. Pope Francis joining Instagram, like Benedict XVI joining Twitter, might prompt a collective raised-eye emoji from journalists.
But they might be reminded that the Vatican itself was an Internet pioneer: Its Web-Site launched in 1995, the same year as CNN’s, and two years before the BBC’s. (Incidentally, those who gripe at how antiquated the Vatican’s Web-Site feels – “so Web 1.0” – are shamelessly flaunting their age. They are clearly much too young to remember GeoCities sites with autoplaying midi soundtracks and a trail of stars following the cursor.) . . .

Join us to celebrate Empire and Flag Weekend during this Spring weekend.
Empire Day was first celebrated in 1902, following the end of The Boer War. Traditionally, it was held on 24 May, the birthday of Queen Victoria – it was intended to encourage people, especially children, to be aware of their duties as citizens of The British Empire.
Illustration: GREAT DAYS OUT
In 2016, we also plan to tell the story of Flag Day, as part of our First World War Commemorations. Flag Days were held by organisations to raise money for causes, including Soldiers on The Front Line, Prisoners-of-War, and support for Disabled Servicemen. Whilst we will not be raising money for charity, we will be commemorating and celebrating the important contribution that young people made towards fundraising during The First World War.
We’ll have Brass Band performances, traditional displays, craft activities and a chance to learn more about The Empire and Flag Days, with the highlight of the day being The Parade at 2.30 p.m., from The Town to The Pit Village, we invite you to line the streets and wave your Flags, proudly !
The Beamish Living Museum of The North.

The Borneo Band, from Durham Army Cadet Force, and Durham/Northumberland Wing ATC Band, will perform on both days, and buildings along the cobbled streets will be decked with Union Jacks and Red, White and Blue bunting. The Co-op shops will have colourful displays of goods from ‘The Colonies’ – teas from Ceylon and India, sugar cane and bananas from Jamaica, and produce from New Zealand and Australia.

At this Season of the Church's Liturgical Year, when Jesus, by His Triumph, has realised His name of Saviour, The Liturgical Cycle Celebrates The Feast of Saint Bernardine, who was consumed "by the very ardent love of The Divine Name (Jesus)" (Collect).
Born of a noble family of Siena, Italy, Saint Bernardine renounced all his possessions. He kept his Chastity intact, in spite of the dangers to which his handsome features exposed him. The Church applies to him the words of Holy Scripture: "He had it in his power to violate The Commandment of God, and he did not violate it" (Epistle).

"Not placing his hope in money and treasures" (ibid), he left all, to follow Christ (Gospel), and entered The Order of Saint Francis, one of whose glories he is. Travelling through towns and villages, everywhere he Preached the name of Jesus (Collect) and thereby wrought many Miracles.
Saint Peter Celestine [Editor: See yesterday's Feast] appeared to him, to warn him of his approaching end, which came on Ascension Eve, 1444.
Let us ask God to grant us, through the intercession and merits of Saint Bernardine, a great love for the name of Jesus and, thereby, to kindle in us the flame of Divine Charity (Collect).

Macedonia Presents His Holiness Pope Francis With A Beautiful Papal Tiara. Handmade By The Nuns Of Rajcica Monastery.
Illustration: UCATHOLIC
For more than a thousand years, the Papal Tiara was as symbol of the authority of the Papacy. But, when Pope Paul VI left his Tiara on the Altar of Saint Peter’s during the closing of The Second Vatican Council, no Pope has worn the Three-Tiered Crown. However, subsequent Popes have received Tiaras, but have not worn them publicly (or likely at all.)
On 16 May, during an audience with Trajko Veljanoski, The Speaker of The Assembly of The Republic of Macedonia, The Holy Father was presented with a beautifully ornate Tiara, handmade by the Nuns of Rajcica Monastery, with Pearls from Ohrid Lake. Up until this point, Pope Francis had not received a Tiara.
Solemn Pontifical Mass, Celebrated by Pope Saint John XXIII, in Saint Peter's Basilica, Vatican City, Rome. Photo probably taken in 1962, at the beginning of The Second Vatican Council. The presence of a lit Paschal Candle in front of the Ambo indicates that The Mass was Celebrated during The Easter Season. Note The Papal Tiaras and the assistance of Eastern Rite Clergy.
Date: 1963 or earlier.

Tiaras are generally received by Popes as gifts from a group of people; for example, Pope Saint John Paul II received a Medieval-Style Tiara on behalf of The People of Hungary.
The Vatican’s Web-Site states that: “The Tiara is a head-dress ending in an Ogive and made of Silver, and, during the time of Pope Boniface VIII (1294 - 1303), two Crowns were on the Tiara, and, from 1314, three Crowns were on the Tiara (the reason it is called "The Triregnum"), topped by a small Globe with a Golden Cross. Among the various interpretations, we shall mention the one that says that The Three Crowns represent The Militant, The Suffering and The Triumphant Church.”

At the death of her father, she distributed all her riches to the Poor, in agreement with her sister, and she was barely sixteen years old when she died, in the Reign of Emperor Antoninus.
Her remains rest in her house, which she had converted into a Church. Her father had received Saint Peter there and she had placed it at the disposal of Pope Pius I, who Celebrated The Holy Mysteries there during "The Persecution".
This is the "Title-Church" of Pudentiana, where The Station is held on the Tuesday in The Third Week of Lent. ["Title-Churches", bearing as Title the name of their Founder or Foundress, were the usual Meeting Places of Christians in Rome, and became the first "Parish Churches".]
