Ushaw College is a former Catholic Seminary, near the village of Ushaw Moor, County Durham, England. It was Founded in 1808 by scholars from The English College, Douai, France, who had fled France after The French Revolution.
Ushaw College was affiliated with The University of Durham from 1968 and was the principal Roman Catholic Seminary for the training of Catholic Priests in The North of England, finally closing in 2011 due to the shortage of Vocations.
The buildings and grounds are now maintained by a Charitable Trust.

During the height of Ushaw Seminary in the 1960s, over 400 Seminarians would attend Daily Divine Mass in this Chapel.

1808 until 2011: historic and yet sad that it closed. It is very telling that the institution survived World Wars and economic downturns but could not survive the “New Mass.” But our leaders will not admit they are wrong. As an older priest explained once, “We shall have to wait until all the Vatican II contemporaries pass away (such as the present Pope) and a new generation arises to see with cold and clear eyes what should be repaired.” (paraphrasing)

ReplyDeleteI believe a Charitable Trust continues to oversee Saint Cuthbert's Chapel. The rest of the Seminary, I understand, is used by Durham University for various activities. I shall make enquiries and let you know the latest situation. Please God, Saint Cuthbert's Chapel will always remain.
I agree wholeheartedly with your older Priest who commented on Vatican II contemporaries.
In 1964, over 600 Seminarians at Ushaw Seminary attending The Divine Mass DAILY in Saint Cuthbert's Chapel. Today, there is NONE. Vatican II (The Novus Ordo) are such magnificent edifices, aren't they ?

ReplyDeleteUshaw College always owned by a Trust, whose Trustees are the Bishops of The Northern Province. This is still the case. Durham University was given a 15-year lease on parts of the building (not including the Chapel). I am guessing that half this lease has run by now. As far as I know, the Rector, Marsland, is still there looking after things. The gardens are open to the public and events are held there. I can only conclude that there is a plan for the place which is secret.
Although some efforts were made to market the whole place after it closed, these plans were withdrawn. All enquiries that I have tried to make have met with a wall of silence.
