Saint Cyriacus, together with Saints Largus and Smaragdus and others (of whom Crescentianus, Memmia and Juliana are mentioned in The Roman Martyrology), is Venerated on
8 August. All that is known with certainty, apart from their names and the fact of their Martyrdom, is that they were buried at The Seventh Milestone of the Via Ostiensis on that date.

As usual, Zephyrinus takes us on a "winged journey" to beautiful and inspiring Catholic shrines throughout the world. The view of the Church of S. Cyriacus in Duderstadt, Niedersachsen (Germany) is a case in point. How can the mind not be elevated to God in such a shrine?
ReplyDeleteThis commenter was interested in the German subscript above under the view of the altar: "Blick auf den Flügelaltar im Hochchor." This commenter's impressive command of Deutsche (!) thought that "flugel" means only "flight, airborne". (An airport is a "flughaven.") So, checking on the matter, a "Flügelaltar" is a "winged altar," and the meaning of the sentence is "View of the winged altar from the high choir." Definitely one's prayers have wings in this shrine. - Comment by Dante P.
Delighted that Dante P also uses (as does Zephyrinus) the correct wordage of “Commenter” for one who Comments. It irritates Zephyrinus when hearing/reading the modern-day usage of “Commentator”. Ugh !!!
DeleteAlso delighted that Dante P's “Deutsche Sprechen” is somewhat better than Zephyrinus’s.
