“Accordingly, he was nominated by the Pope for the dignity of Titular Archbishop of Damietta on 27 January 1843, being then only thirty-three years old.

“He received Episcopal Consecration on 19 February 1843 in the historic Church in Rome of Saint Lawrence, where authentic Tradition locates the heroic Martyrdom of the 
Arch-Deacon of The Roman Church.

“This was the second time that Monsignor Pecci had not followed the usual steps through hierarchical advancement.

“He was a Monsignor before he was Ordained a Priest.

“And, now, he was an Archbishop 
before he later became a Bishop”.
