The time of Advent – from the Latin “Adventus”,
which means “Coming” – is the Liturgical time
in preparation for Christmas.
This period was instituted in the West during the
5th-Century A.D., probably in echo of the Councils of
Ephesus and Chalcedon, which oriented Preachers
towards the Mystery of the Incarnation.
In Rome, the Stational Mass of this first day of the
Liturgical Year is Celebrated in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, rebuilt in 432 A.D., after the Council of Ephesus,
in honour of the Mother of God.
Moreover, the Sermon of Saint Gregory the Great,
which is read tonight at the Nocturnal Office,
was pronounced in this Basilica.
