  1. Another fascinating armchair travel log by Zephyrinus, this in particular to the Czech Republic to see this beautiful High Baroque church Saint John of Nepomuk Catholic Church, Prostějov, Czech Republic. dedicated to the martyr, S. John Nepomuk (d.1393) in his birthplace.

There was a church, a semi -public oratory, on the same site, situated on a manor property , dedicated to S. John the Baptist, but in the 1600’s with the publication of an account of the saint’s life, it was decided to rebuild that church and dedicate it to S. John Nepomuk (who had not yet been beatified: that was to happen in 1721). That church, finished in 1660, funded by a wealthy benefactor unfortunately was destroyed by fire in 1686, but subsequently restored by the benefactor’s son.

After the Saint’s canonization in 1729, the church was vastly rebuilt and decorated in the present magnificent style. Another fire occurred in 1741 with subsequent repairs and restoration but in a simpler style and a smaller altar. The present altar and full restoration is the result of the work of the Czech National Heritage Authority (1928, and later in 1992–93). 2. (Part 2:) It is interesting how so many beautiful sanctuaries, like this one also, somehow survive through absolutely catastrophic circumstances: fire, or natural disasters. —comment by Dante P
