Saint Prisca suffered cruel torments, at the age of thirteen, under The Emperor, Claudius, in the 1st-Century A.D.
In spite of the efforts made to force her to adore idols, her great Faith filled her with The Divine Strength of Jesus and she went to Heaven wearing the Double Crown of her Virginity and of her Martyrdom.
Mass: Me exspectavérunt.
Collects: Proper to this Saint’s Feast Day.

Of course as Zephyrinus knows, S.. Prisca also is the titular saint of the ancient basilica and stational church (Tuesday of Holy Week) in Rome @ 11 Via di Santa Prisca. That present church the historians tell us dates from at least the reign of P. Honorius I (625-638 AD) (although elements of the church and the site date back to 4th-5th C.).
ReplyDeleteThere is an argument among the scholars as to whether the historical accounts of S. Prisca, her martyrdom, and her burial in the catacombs at Via Salaria, prior to the translation of her relics to the basilica named for her, are confused in the ancient historical record with the life of another martyr, S. Priscilla, who also has ancient Roman Christian catacombs (1st-2nd C.) of some considerable note dedicated to her. At any rate, S. Prisca and her basilica are important to the history of Catholic belief and the records of the ancient Roman Christian hagiography. -Note by Dante P.
A most interesting contribution from our Mediæval Liturgical Architectural Historical Correspondent, Dante P, for which we are most grateful.
DeleteIt is a wonderful thing that these Martyrs, Saint Prisca, Saint Priscilla, etc, are still Commemorated and remembered, thousands of years after their great sacrifice. May they continue to watch over us in this less-than-perfect World.
Saint Prisca, Saint Priscilla: Pray for us.
