Text from The Saint Andrew Daily Missal,
unless otherwise stated.

Easter Saturday.

Station at Saint John Lateran.

Indulgence of 30 Years and 30 Quarantines.

Semi-Double.

White Vestments.

On coming out of the Baptismal Font, the Neophytes were given a White garment (a White veil is now placed over the newly-Baptised during the Baptismal Ceremonies) as a symbol of the effects of Baptism on their Souls: “All you who have been Baptised have put on Christ” (Communion).

They continued to wear it until the day known as “Sabbatum in albis depositis” (“the Saturday on which White vestments are laid aside”), because, on that day, at Saint John Lateran, their Baptismal Robes were taken from them.

The Church, seeing “those new-born babes” (Epistle) gathered around her, asks them, by the mouth of Saint Peter, her Head, ever to drink the spiritual and pure milk of the True Doctrine.

And in that Basilica, dedicated to the Holy Redeemer, she reminds them that their Souls are the Living Stones of a spiritual house, of which Christ is the Corner-Stone.

The Gospel also shows us the Prince of the Apostles, who, even before Saint John, realised the Resurrection of Christ, of which he is to be witness to the whole Church.

Mass: Edúxit Dóminus.
From this day, until the Feast of The Blessed Trinity, the Gradual is replaced by two Versicles with four Alleluias.
Sequence: Victimæ pascháli laudes.
Creed: Is said.
Preface: For Easter.
Communicantes: For Easter.
Hanc igitur: For Easter.

  1. Other readers (and perhaps Zephyrinus too) will have to pardon this reader's fascination with the ancient Roman catechumenate and the neophytes' daily journey through the stational churches of Lent and Easter Week. Yet every day is a catechetical day even for us "older brother" Christians, with much for us to never stop our spiritual "learning." (Cont., Comment by Dante P)

    1. Zephyrinus concurs, Dante P, with the Comment.

Whenever Zephyrinus has the privilege and pleasure to compose a Post, especially during the Lenten Period and Easter Week, there is always something new, something previously not understood, to learn from and to learn about.

It is pleasing that Dante P, our Mediæval Liturgical, Historical, Archological, Horological, and Roman Pilgrimage Consultant, finds these Posts of use and much interest.

We thank Dante P for his invaluable interest and contributions.

  2. So, after the long Lenten journey of 40 days and 7 days more (with the quiet, bucolic setting of the Discalced Carmelite basilica of S. Pancras tomorrow), this is "Sabbatum in albis depositis" for the newly baptized, once again appearing at the great
"Cathedral to the World, S. John Lateran. Laying aside their white robes, they continue their journey with us in the Christian life. As Dom Lefebvre and Zephyrinus both note above, the reading from 1 Peter 2:2 (which is repeated in tomorrow's "Quasimodo" Sunday Introit), " As newborn babes, desire the rational milk without guile, that thereby you may grow unto salvation: If so be, you have tasted that the Lord is sweet." From the vast dark unlit S. John Lateran of Holy Saturday night to the light of Easter, for them and us: "... Qui de ténebris vos vocávit in admirábile lumen suum."

What an amazing vicariously experienced parable of all our lives in the daily stational churches of Lent and Easter. This reader can never “get enough of it. “-Comment by Dante P

    1. A wonderful synopsis of our Lenten Journey from Dante P, our Mediæval Liturgical and Archeological Correspondent, for which we are most grateful.

As Dante P correctly states: We have now travelled the Forty Days of Lent; We have visited the Stational Churches; We now embark upon our new and refreshed journey in Paschal-Tide.

      Thanks be to God.

      In Domino.
