“South Pacific” is a 1958 American romantic musical
and Hammerstein stage musical, which in turn was based on James A. Michener’s 1947 short-story collection
Ray Walston, and France Nuyen in the leading roles with Juanita Hall as Bloody Mary, the part that she had played
in the original stage production.
It is set in 1943, during World War II,
on an island in the South Pacific.
The film was released in a roadshow presentation by
Magna Theatre Corporation on 19 March 1958, and
in General Release by 20th Century Fox.
South Pacific was a great commercial success, becoming
the highest-grossing Rodgers and Hammerstein musical film until the release of The Sound of Music.[6]
At the 31st Academy Awards, the film won
Best Sound out of three total nominations.
It was also nominated for three Golden Globes, including
in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (for Mitzi Gaynor).

Thank you for this wonderful memorabilia moment, Zephyrinus. South Pacific: A wonderful musical sound track, and one of Rodger’s (a musical genius) and Hammerstein’s (a lyric artist) best and most listenable series of compositions in this humble scribe’s opinion, perhaps only second to The Sound of Music. A wonderful
ReplyDeletecinematic mix of whimsy, drama, comedy, and yet also in its climax, a recollection of the wartime sacrifices made during WW2. -Comment by Dante P
A wonderful and accurate assessment of the magnificent “South Pacific” film of the Late-1950s from our Mediæval Cinematic Correspondent and Historian, Dante P.
DeleteA sentimental memory for Zephryinus as it was the first-ever Film that he invited a young lady to see with him. One often wonders what happened to that vision of Heaven !!!
Long may “South Pacific” be available to us all and a huge Thank You to Rodgers and Hammerstein.
