The Mass composed for the occasion has since been appointed for the 18th Sunday After Pentecost; it still relates to the Dedication of a Church. The present Mass was composed more recently.
The Hebrew meaning of “Michæl” is: “Who is like God ?”, and recalls the combat which took place in Heaven between “The Archangel of God, who deserved to be placed at the Head of the Heavenly Host”, and the devil.

As we have fallen through sin into the power of Satan, it is Saint Michæl’s part to continue the fight for our deliverance (Alleluia, and Prayer after Mass); wherefore, our Guardian Angels are subordinate to him.
Saint Michæl conquers Satan’s pride and obtains humility for us. It is also he who presides over the Worship of Adoration rendered to The Most High, for he offers to God the Prayers of the Saints, symbolised by Incense, whose smoke rises towards Heaven (Offertory, Blessing of the Incense).

When a Christian has left this World, we Pray that the Standard-Bearer, Saint Michæl, should introduce the Christian into Heaven; he is also often represented with the Scales of Divine Justice, wherein Souls are weighed. His name is mentioned in the Confiteor, after that of Mary, who is The Queen of Angels.
Saint Michæl was the Protecting Angel of the Synagogue, as he is now of The Church, which has succeeded it. To him, the Liturgy attributes the Revelation of the Future, made to Saint John in the Apocalypse (Epistle).

Mass: Benedícite Dóminum, omnes Angeli ejus.

Of course, Zephyrinus knows the full tradition of this very ancient feast (“Michaelmas”) in the West (In the Eastern Church, it is the Synaxis of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and the Other Bodiless Powers—on November 8th) goes back to ca. 490 AD, when an apparition by the archangel himself on the height of Mt. Gargano in Southern Italy on the Adriatic coast, announced his dedication of the site: Hence it is called “The Celestial Basilica”. It is an extraordinary holy site as pictures of the ancient basilica on the Internet immediately convey. Pope Gelasius (d.497) extended the feast to the whole church, and in fact it was a holy day of obligation until the 18th C., signifying how important it was so honored. In fact, S. Francis of Assisi embarked on a final 40 day fast and prayer specifically dedicated to S. Michael during which he received the stigmata (Sept. 18th) shortly before he passed.
ReplyDeleteThe downward emphasis in the post-1962 Church is a sad matter, but regardless, for the rest of those so inspired, now is a time worth celebrating that the greatest ally of ours near God’s throne wishes always, with our Holy Guardian Angel (Oct. 2) to protect us from Satan’s thrall always even now.
Interestingly, “Folklore says that after St. Michael cast Lucifer out of heaven, the devil landed in a thorny blackberry bush and cursed the fruit. Tradition dictates that blackberries should not be picked or eaten after September 29.”
God bless S. Michael! -Comment by Dante P
A magnificent contribution from our Mediæval Angelic Hosts Correspondent, Dante P, for which we are most grateful.
DeleteSaint Michael, as Dante P states, is one of the greatest allies of ours, who stands near to God's throne. He, along with our Blessed Mother Mary and our Guardian Angel, wishes always to protect us from The Powers of Hell. Always include Saint Michael in your Daily Prayers and request his protection.
Zephyrinus has instructed Beauregarde (the Gardener) not to pick Blackberries from the Walled Victorian Fruit Garden after 29 September !!! So, no more Blackberry Pie and Custard for another few months !!! As the Irish always say: “Offer it up !!!”.
Saint Michæl the Archangel: Ora Pro Nobis. Defend us in the day of battle.
