Ulrich was born in 890 A.D. at Kyburg, now part of the Canton of Zürich. When aged seven, he joined the Monastery of Saint Gall, where he became an excellent scholar.

In 910 A.D., he was sent to his relative, Adalbero, Bishop of Augsburg, who made him Chamberlain. Ulrich was appointed Bishop of Augsburg by the Holy Roman Emperor, Henry I of Germany, and was Consecrated on 28 December 923 A.D.

More on our Saint can be found here on Wikipedia. Ulrich died on 4 July 973 A.D., He had ashes strewn on the ground in the shape of a Cross and the Cross was sprinkled with Holy Water, and he was placed upon it.

He was buried at the Saint Afra Church he had rebuilt in Augsburg.

Many Miracles are said to have been wrought at his grave; only twenty years after his death, Ulrich was Canonised by Pope John XV on 4 July 993 A.D.

He was the first Saint to be Canonised by a Pope, rather than by a local authority.

Legend held that pregnant women who drank from his Chalice had easy deliveries, and thus developed his Patronage of pregnant women and easy births.

He is also Patron against faintness; fever; mice and moles; Patron of the Diocese of Augsburg, Germany; Patron of a happy death; and weavers.
