The Twentieth Century Society is giving its support to a campaign to save an outstanding 1950s Mosaic of The Crucifixion, which is under threat because the Roman Catholic Church, where it is displayed, in Oldham, Lancashire, has been earmarked for closure.

The campaign group has applied to Historic England to List the Mosaic by Jewish refugee Georg Mayer-Marton, a leading figure in The Viennese Art World in the 1920s and 1930s.

Senior Conservation Adviser Clare Price said: “The significance of this artwork lies not only in the high quality of its technique, but also as a rare example of Post-War Ecclesiastical Art by a highly-regarded artist.”

[Editor: Zephyrinus perfectly understands that this Mosaic may not be everybody's idea of "good art". However, that does not diminish the World-class reputation and renown of Georg Mayer-Marton and his example of Post-War Ecclesiastical Art, previously painted over in the 1980s !!!]
