Saint Laurence, born in Venice, Italy, in the 15th-Century, of the illustrious family of Giustiniani, preferred the severe austerities of The Cloister to a glorious alliance arranged for him by his mother.

Looking at a Crucifix, he exclaimed: "It is Thou, O Lord, Who art my hope, and in Thee is consolation and strength." He then entered among The Canons of Saint George of Alga.

All his life, he practised the greatest austerity and it was chiefly in assiduous Prayer that he was inflamed with ardent love for God and devotion to his neighbour. He was called by Pope Eugenius IV to share in the full power of Christ's Priesthood: He was made Patriarch of Grado, but, Transferring the See to Venice, in 1451, he became the first Patriarch of this City.

He died in 1455, saying: "I am going to Thee, O Good Jesus."

Mass: Státuit.

Lawrence Giustiniani, C.R.S.A. (Italian: Lorenzo Giustiniani, 1 July 1381 – 8 January 1456), is Venerated as a Saint by The Catholic Church. He was a Canon Regular, who was appointed as a Bishop and became the first Patriarch of Venice.

He was a member of the well-known Giustiniani family, which includes several Saints. The piety of his mother seems to have served as an inspiration for his own Spirituality, as he chose of a life of Prayer and Service. In 1404, after he had been Ordained a Deacon, at the suggestion of an uncle who was a Priest, he joined a Community of Secular Canons following a Monastic form of life on the Island of San Giorgio in Alga. He was admired by his fellows for his poverty, mortification, and fervency of Prayer. Two years after his Ordination to The Catholic Priesthood, in 1407, the Community accepted The Rule of Saint Augustine. He was chosen to be the first Prior of the Community.

Giustiniani promoted the Constitutions which he had established for the Canons of Saint George, which was embraced by other Communities of Canons in the region, and, shortly thereafter, he became the Prior General of a Congregation. He was so zealous in spreading it that he was looked upon as if he were the actual Founder of The Order.

In 1433, Pope Eugene IV, one of the Founders of the Monastery of San Giorgio, named Giustiniani as the Bishop of Castello. He found a Diocese in shambles, and his Administration was marked by considerable growth and reform. In 1451, Pope Nicholas V united the Diocese of Castello with the Patriarchate of Grado, and the Seat of the Patriarchate was moved to Venice, making Giustiniani the first Patriarch of Venice, a Post that he held for over four years.

It was during Giustiniani's rule that Constantinople fell to Muslim forces. Due to their Centuries of close trading partnerships with the Byzantine Empire, the people of Venice were in panic as to their future. He took a leading role in helping the Republic of Venice to deal with the crisis, working with the Senate to help chart its future, as well as with the Clergy and people to calm them.

He died on 8 January 8 1456, and was Canonised by Pope Alexander VIII (1689–1691). His works, consisting of Sermons, Letters and ascetic Treatises, have been frequently reprinted.

Pope Innocent XII (1691–1700) inserted his Feast Day in The General Roman Calendar for Celebration on 5 September, the Anniversary of his elevation to the Episcopate.

In 1945, Carnforth Railway Station was used as a Set for the David Lean film "Brief Encounter", starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. Fans of this film were one of the major factors in the recent refurbishment of the Railway Station, including construction of a Refreshment Room to match the Studio Set used in the film, which is now run by The Carnforth Station Trust.

Brief Encounter is a 1945 British romantic drama film, directed by David Lean, about British suburban life on the eve of World War Two, centring on Laura, a married woman with children, whose conventional life becomes increasingly complicated because of a chance meeting at a Railway Station with a married stranger, Alec. They fall in love, bringing about unexpected consequences.

The film stars Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway and Joyce Carey. The screenplay is by Noël Coward, based on his 1936 One-Act Play Still Life. The Soundtrack prominently features The Piano Concerto No. 2, by Sergei Rachmaninoff, played by Eileen Joyce.

Brief Encounter was met with wide praise from Critics upon its release, and is, today, considered to be among Lean's finest Works. It has been credited as an important early Work of Realist Cinema for its small scale and the lack of Big-Name Stars in its Cast. In 1999, The British Film Institute voted Brief Encounter the second greatest British film of all time. In 2017, a poll of 150 actors, directors, writers, producers and critics for Time Out magazine saw it ranked the twelfth best British film ever.

Dame Olga Maria Elisabeth Friederike Schwarzkopf, DBE (9 December 1915 – 3 August 2006) was a German Soprano. She was among the foremost singers of Lieder, and was renowned for her performances of Viennese Operetta, as well as the Operas of Mozart, Wagner and Richard Strauss After retiring from The Stage, she was a Voice Teacher Internationally. She is considered one of the greatest Sopranos of the 20th-Century.

"Glück, das mir verblieb" (German for "Joy, that near to me remained") is a Duet from the 1920 Opera Die tote Stadt (The Dead City) composed by Erich Wolfgang Korngold to a Libretto by his father, Julius Korngold, as Paul Schott.

It is written for a Soprano and Tenor. Also called "The Lute Song", it appears in Act 1, approx. twenty-five minutes into the Opera. For performances as a Concert Aria, a Soprano will sing both parts.

"The Dead City" in the Opera's Title is Bruges, Belgium, identified in the opera with Marie, the dead wife of Paul. At the start of Act 1, Paul confides in a friend the extraordinary news that he has seen Marie, or her double, in the Town and that he has invited her to the house.

She arrives, and Paul addresses her as Marie, but she corrects him: She is Marietta, a dancer from Lille. He is enchanted by her, especially when she accepts his request for a song, "Glück, das mir verblieb".

The words tell of the joy of love, but there is a sadness in it, also, because its theme is the transitory nature of life. Their voices combine in the Verse which extols the power of love to remain constant in a fleeting World.

Glück, das mir verblieb,
rück zu mir, mein treues Lieb.
Abend sinkt im Hag
bist mir Licht und Tag.
Bange pochet Herz an Herz
Hoffnung schwingt sich himmelwärts.

Wie wahr, ein traurig Lied.
Das Lied vom treuen Lieb,
das sterben muss.

Ich kenne das Lied.
Ich hört es oft in jungen,
in schöneren Tagen.
Es hat noch eine Strophe —
weiß ich sie noch ?

Naht auch Sorge trüb,
rück zu mir, mein treues Lieb.
Neig dein blaß Gesicht
Sterben trennt uns nicht.
Mußt du einmal von mir gehn,
glaub, es gibt ein Auferstehn.

Joy, that near to me remains,
Come to me, my true love.
Night sinks into the grove
You are my light and day.
Anxiously beats heart on heart
Hope itself soars heavenward.

How true, a sad song.
The song of true love,
that must die.

I know the song.
I heard it often in younger,
in better days.
It has yet another verse —
Do I know it still ?

Though sorrow becomes dark,
Come to me, my true love.
Lean (to me) your pale face
Death will not separate us.
If you must leave me one day,
Believe, there is an afterlife.

OLD CATHEDRAL

The Church of The Most Precious Blood is The National Shrine Church of San Gennaro and the location of Holy Doors during The Year of Mercy. Located on Baxter Street, Manhattan, with an additional entrance on Mulberry Street, The Church of The Most Precious Blood is part of Manhattan's Little Italy neighbourhood, and the sister Church of the Basilica of Saint Patrick's Old Cathedral.

During The Feast of San Gennaro, a statue of San Gennaro is taken from its home within the Church on a Procession through the streets of Little Italy. The construction of The Most Precious Blood Church was initiated by The Scalabrini Fathers in the Late-19th-Century. The Scalabrini Order built the foundation, but ran out of funds to complete the job. The Franciscans then took over the Parish and completed the Church building.

It is the home of the extraordinary Nativity of Mercy, which beautifully presents The Birth of Christ, and The Works of Mercy in an awe inspiring display. "Presepe or Presepio" - as it is affectionately called by Italians of all regions - is the result of countless hours of work of the artists of

La Scarabattola, a prestigious artistic Italian firm. The original idea of representing The Birth of Christ is traditionally associated with Saint Francis of Assisi, who, in Greccio, in 1223, invited
all to participate in The Coming of The Lord by re-enacting the scene at The Manger.

Appropriately, The Nativity of Mercy presents Saint Francis while speaking to the birds.

The Church of The Most Precious Blood is home to several vibrant Religious Societies, in addition to "The Figli di San Gennaro", including: The Community of Sant Egidio, The Craco Society, and The San Angelo Society. Besides the strong Italian Tradition, the Vietnamese Congregation has also grown in recent years.

ROME, 26 August 2018 (LifeSiteNews) -- “The corruption and filth which have entered into the life of The Church must be purified at their roots,” said Vatican Cardinal Raymond Burke in response to a Life Site request for comment on the release of Archbishop Carlo Viganò’s testimony.

The eleven-page Letter, issued by the former Papal Representative in The United States, released to LifeSiteNews and a few other outlets, is filled with revelations of scandals within the hierarchy.

“The declarations made by a Prelate of the authority of Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò must be totally taken to heart by those responsible in The Church,” said Burke. “Each declaration must be subject to investigation, according to The Church’s time-tried Procedural Law.”

Texas Bishop Urges:
"Thorough Investigation"
Of Allegations Against Pope Francis.

TYLER, Texas. 26 August 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – After the release last night of an explosive Letter by The Vatican’s former Nuncio to The United States, a Texas Bishop said he found the allegations against the Pope and other senior Cardinals to be “credible,” and called for a “thorough investigation.”

Bishop Joseph E. Strickland, of Tyler, Texas, told Priests to “include this Notice in the Masses on
26 August 2018, and post it on their Web-Sites and other Social Media, immediately.”

The principal charge in the eleven-page Letter, by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, is that Pope Francis knew about sexual abuse of Seminarians by former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, and, nonetheless, removed sanctions that had been imposed against the Cardinal by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

Pope Tells Media:

About McCarrick Cover-Up.

26 August 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Pope Francis sidestepped questions today about explosive allegations that he knew of former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick’s abuse, and nevertheless lifted Sanctions that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI had imposed against the Cardinal.

Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, who served as Apostolic Nuncio in Washington D.C.,
from 2011-2016, wrote in a Letter published last night that, after Pope Francis’ election, he had communicated the problems about McCarrick to the Pope, but rather than continue the Sanctions, Pope Francis made McCarrick “his trusted counsellor.”

The Pope was questioned about the allegation aboard the Papal plane this evening on the way back to Rome after his visit to Ireland for the World Meeting of Families.

“Read the Statement carefully yourselves and make your own judgement. I am not going to say a word about this,” Pope Francis said.

A descendant of those proud and terrible invaders, The Huns, Stephen was chosen by God to win over his subjects to Christ and His Vicar.

He was given the Baptismal name of Stephen, in consequence of his mother having a vision of the Martyr, Saint Stephen, who foretold her that he would convert Hungary, whose first King he became when the Pope had raised the Country into a Kingdom.

Having married the sister of the Emperor, Saint Henry, he surrounded himself, to govern his Kingdom, with men of tried Holiness and Prudence. He passed entire nights in the contemplation of Heavenly things (Introit), practised the greatest austerities, and, seconded by the Queen, his pious spouse, gave abundant alms (Epistle) to widows and Churches.

The greatness of his zeal, for the propagation of The Faith, justly won for him the Title of Apostolic King or of Apostle of Hungary, and deservedly obtained for him from The Holy See the privilege, transmitted to his successors, to have The Cross borne before him.

He built a large Basilica in honour of Mary, whom he proclaimed Patroness of Hungary. "His zeal in propagating and strengthening The Faith in his Kingdom earned for him the glory of a Heavenly Crown" (Postcommunion).

He died in 1038 on "The Day of The Great Lady", as The Feast of The Assumption was called by the Hungarians, in virtue of an edict of the Holy King.

Beneventan Chant is a Liturgical Plainchant repertory of The Roman Catholic Church, used primarily in the orbit of the Southern Italian Ecclesiastical centres of Benevento and Monte Cassino. It is distinct from Gregorian Chant and related to Ambrosian Chant.

It was officially supplanted by the Gregorian Chant of The Roman Rite in the 11th-Century, although a few Beneventan Chants of local interest remained in use.

During the Lombard occupation of the 7th-Century A.D. and 8th-Century A.D., a distinctive Liturgical Rite and Plainchant Tradition developed in Benevento. It included Feasts of special local importance, such as The Holy Twelve Brothers of Benevento.

At the time, it was called Cantus Ambrosianus (Ambrosian Chant), although it is a separate Plainchant Tradition from The Chant of Milan, which we call Ambrosian Chant. The common use of the name Cantus Ambrosianus, the common influence of The Lombards in both Benevento and Milan, and musical similarities between the two Liturgies and Chant Traditions, suggest a Lombard influence in the origins of Beneventan Chant.

Saint Giles, born in Athens, distributed all his patrimony to The Poor and followed Jesus (Gospel). Several Miracles having made him celebrated, he fled to Provence, France, to escape away from honours. He lived in Prayer and Meditation (Introit) in the depths of a vast forest, with no other food but roots and the milk of a tame Hind.

One day, when pursued by the hounds of the Visigoth King, Wamba, The Hind fled to the grotto of the Saint, who, while trying to protect her, had his hand pierced by an arrow. The King, on his arrival, urgently begged the Saint to consent to the building of a Monastery on the spot.

The Holy Hermit undertook its governance and, like Moses among The People of God (Epistle), he became The Chief and Law-Giver of a numerous Monastic family which followed his leadership, his Doctrine, and his Counsels (Communion). This happened in 673 A.D.

The Abbey of Saint Giles, a marvel of architecture, became one of the most frequented resorts of Pilgrims in The Middles Ages, and a Town arose there. The Counts of Toulouse regarded it as an honour to bear this Saint's name.

The ancient Missals place him among "The Fourteen Auxiliary Saints". He was invoked in France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany, and England, where 146 Churches were built in his honour. Saint Giles died about 721 A.D. His tomb was discovered in 1865.
